DeHaan Selected To D-2 All-Region Team

The Escanaba High School baseball team did not make it to the regional tournament for the first time in six years.

But despite losing in the districts, Eskymo first baseman Alex DeHaan was chosen to the Division Two All-Region Team by the Michigan High School Baseball Coaches Association.

Wednesday's announcement means that DeHaan is eligible for All-State consideration. He batted a team-best .471, led in base hits, and had a 96.2% fielding percentage defensively.

ESCANABA---The Escanaba High School baseball team officially ended its 2010 season with its annual post-season awards program Sunday night in the city's Ludington Park.

Escanaba ended up with a fine 26-5 record, but with a loss in the district finals to Petoskey, the team had its earliest exit in recent years. And that is something that Eskymo Manager Don Lauscher noted was a one-time-only thing, as far as he's concerned.

"This is the shortest season I've had here, and I don't like it," Lauscher told the gathering. "This was our first district loss, and I hope it will be our last. To me, that is unacceptable. And I plan to be more involved with our youth baseball programs this summer than I have been before. Great teams are made in the off-season."

Despite the earlier-than-usual playoff exit (the first time in six years), Lauscher looked back on the 2010 season fondly.

"It was the most fun I've had in any season I have coached," he told the kids. "The future looks bright, for sure."

Lauscher also put to rest any speculation that he would retire from coaching, noting numerous times how much he was looking forward to specific players contributing in 2011, and he made it clear what he expected from his players as he enters his fifth season in charge.

"Get in the weight room," Lauscher said. "Start conditioning now. Play as much baseball as you can. And we have a couple of kids who can pitch, and we want them to actually pitch next year."

The Escanaba Eskymos were well-represented on the Division Two All-District Baseball team, announced on Thursday. The district's coaches voted four Eskymos to the team: senior Travis Villeneuve (pitcher), junior Trent Schwalbach (utility player), and sophomores Alex DeHaan (first base) and Austin Young (center field).

DeHaan was the top vote-getter at first base. All four Eskymos qualify for All-Region consideration. Pictured above: DeHaan (5) stretches for a throw during a game in Norway. Pictured at left: Villeneuve throws a pitch during a game in Gaylord.
