U.P. Little League Pioneer Dickson Dead At 94

The man who singlehandedly started Little League Baseball in the Upper Peninsula has died. Karl Dickson of Escanaba passed away on Tuesday at the age of 94. He introduced Little League to the U.P. in 1951, and ran the program until 1961, when it was split from the Wisconsin. Dickson was the District Administrator from 1961 to 1993.
Current District Ten Administrator Don Howes mourned the loss of his predecessor.
"The kids always came first with Karl," Howes said. "He was unselfish and he was involved in a lot of things. He was the backbone of getting Little League started up here. Karl told me one time, 'you know, I never played on a team. I love baseball.baseball is my favorite sport.but I always got cut'."
"I never played on a team either, so we were alike," Howes continued. "But he always wanted the kids to play. He believed that every kid should play. Karl was also big in starting girls softball. Back in 1979, he told me to 'run with it', and so I did." Funeral arrangements are incomplete.
