Escanaba Little League Finalizes Boycott
The Escanaba Little League has finalized its plans to boycott the 2010 All-Star tournaments. In a statement released Thursday, the league says it cannot operate under a system that it says leaves it at a disadvantage to neighboring Gladstone.
For years, Escanaba has been trying to get the boundaries changed so that kids from the Soo Hill and Wells areas (who go to school in Escanaba) would play in Escanaba instead of Gladstone.
Gladstone Little League has resisted those proposed changes. This year, Gladstone has just under 500 kids registered, according to Gladstone Little League President Mike Gobert. Escanaba has only 300 kids registered, according to Escanaba League Treasurer Sandi Young.
Will Gladstone consider a boundry change?
"No," Gobert said, "and the reason is this. What am I going to get in return? You're cutting my league, then what happens five or six years down the road and the numbers change again? Or if Schaffer went into the Escanaba League?"
"Would they turn around and give Gladstone anything? No. We had nothing to do with setting those boundries. Escanaba set the boundries."
District Ten Administrator Don Howes says his hands are tied.
"Mike Legge (Central Regional Director) says one league cannot grow at the expense of another league," Howes said. "Both parties must agree. I can't force Gladstone to agree. Escanaba is frustrated by its numbers, but the boundry issue is only part of the problem. Other baseball leagues, soccer is getting bigger. There's a lot of factors."
In its statement, Escanaba Little League says the parents who attended a Tuesday night meeting are in support of the boycott, and will work together to form teams to participate in tournaments run by other groups.
They're also looking at withdrawing from All-Stars in 2011, and forming alternative leagues to participate in next summer. |
