Esky Ties Mqt; Gladstone Loses To Westwood
The high school girls tennis regular season came to an end Tuesday afternoon, with the Escanaba Eskymos and Gladstone Braves both playing matches in Marquette County.
ESCANABA 4, MARQUETTE 4---The Eskymos won at #2 and #3 singles, and at #3 and #4 doubles. Codi Jenshak (pictured at right) defeated Marquette's Beth Seavoy, 7-6, 6-3 at #2 singles; and Lauren Beversluis cruised past Leslie Schmeling, 6-0, 6-1, at #3 singles. Escanaba's Erin Gregoire (#1 singles) and Elise Oswald (#4 singles) both lost tough three-set matches. Esky's doubles teams of Kaitlyn Kell and Cathryn Wood (#3); and Braedyn Bosilovatz and Josie Goddard (#4), won their matches.
WESTWOOD 8, GLADSTONE 0---The only Gladstone flight to win a game was the #3 doubles team of Abbie Parks and Cassandra LaMarche, who lost to Mindy Harrington and Kaylin Marshall, 10-7, in the third set. Another competitive match was at #1 singles, where Gladstone's Whitney Wells lost to Patriot Victoria Powelson, 7-6, 6-3. |
Eskymos Win Ninth Straight Tennis Match, 5-3
The Escanaba High School tennis team stayed undefeated in Great Northern Conference play by beating the Kingsford Flivvers, 5-3, Thursday evening in Dickinson County. Escanaba won at #2, #3 and #4 singles, and at #1 and #3 doubles.
Escanaba Coach Dennis Lueneburg was happy with his team's performance, especially the #1 doubles team of Mallory McPhee and Lauren Kulbertis. "They were one game away from losing, and they battled back," he said.
Lueneburg was impressed with Kingsford's #4 doubles team, which includes Kelly Allen, who has only one leg. Allen was born with Proximal Femoral Focal Deficiency, and has an artificial leg. "It's such a nice story," Lueneburg said. "I've known her for three years. She's learned to position herself on the court in places where she can get to the ball, and when she gets it, she has a nice stroke. Always a smile on her face."

GLADSTONE 5, MENOMINEE 3---The Braves beat the Maroons for the second time this season, but this time it was a lot closer. "The last time we played them, we swept them, but there were a lot of close matches," Gladstone Coach Rich Trombly said. "We didn't play very well (today)." Gladstone travels to Kingsford next Monday. |
Eskymos Stop Munising For 8th Straight Win

The Escanaba Eskymos beat the Munising Mustangs, 6-2, in girls tennis Wednesday afternoon. The Eskymos won all four doubles matches, and won the #2 and #3 singles. "The girls were tested today," Esky Coach Dennis Lueneberg said. "The girls are pumped up for tomorrow." Escanaba visits Kingsford on Thursday.

"We're having a nice season so far," Eskymo Coach Dennis Lunenberg said. "We've come a long way since the Iron Mountain match (their only loss). I'm really impressed with Codi Jenshak at #2. When I explain what we're supposed to be doing on the court, she really gets it."
