Wolverines Finish Season 3-6

The 2007 football season came to an end for the Mid Peninsula Wolverines Thursday with a 46-28 loss to the Rapid River Rockets in Rapid River.

The Wolverines fell behind 26-0, made a third-quarter rally, but eventually lost thanks to a variety of mistakes and big plays by the Rockets. The loss gave Mid Pen a 3-6 season record, the first losing season in a decade.

Things got off to a bad start for Mid Pen when a Todd Winkelbauer lateral pass missfired and bounced backwards 15 yards. The Wolverines had to punt two plays later, and Rapid River went on a 76-yard drive to draw first blood.

Derek McCarty's 51-yard run got it started, then he scored on a 16-yard scamper on fourth down to put the Rockets on top. The Wolverines responded well, moving from their own 27 yard-line to the Rapid River 9. But Brad Verbrigghe was stopped four yards short of a first down, turning the ball over on downs.

The mistakes continued to add up for Mid Pen as they fumbled after forcing the Rockets to punt, then the next time they had the ball, the Wolverines turned it over on an interception by Dustin Lovell.

After that interception, Rapid went on an impressive 90-yard drive that took 11 plays to complete. A key play happened on 4th-and-7 when Alex Lindahl found Jake Nicholson along the sidelines for a nine-yard pass. He kept his toes in-bounds, and two plays later, McCarty scored on a one-yard run to make it 12-0.

Brent Forsyth added the two-point run to make it 14-0, then Rapid River got the ball back on yet another Mid Pen mistake. This one was a high snap that punter Travis Depuydt could not handle, giving the Rockets the ball at the 35 yard-line.

Lindahl hooked up with Lovell on back-to-back passes of 20 and 14 yards, then Lindahl pushed his way into the end zone for a touchdown. That made it 20-0, then, another Mid Pen caught a bad break. The kickoff hit the ground hard and bounced off Mid Pen's R.J. Koski, who never had time to get out of the way.

Rapid took advantage with a 50-yard, five-play drive that ended on a 16-yard touchdown pass from Lindahl to Lovell. That happened on 4th-and-6, the third major play the Rockets converted on fourth down. It was a 26-0 Rapid River lead at halftime.

Mid Peninsula came out inspired in the second half. The Wolverines forced the Rockets into a three-and-out, then, after a short punt, drove 40 yards in six plays to get on the board. Justin Wigand had an outstanding run, breaking several tackles to score on a 13-yard dash.

Winkelbauer ran in the two-point play to make it 26-8. Moments later, Wigand came up with a big defensive play as he intercepted a Lindahl pass near mid-field.

It took Mid Pen two plays to score again, with Winkelbauer finding a wide-open Wigand along the hashmarks. Wigand ran along the sidelines, and with four Rockets nearby, started to cut toward the middle of the field. He turned on the speed and sprinted his way 41 yards into the end zone, bringing Mid Pen to within 26-14.

Mid Pen's defense forced the Rockets into a 3rd-and-9 situation, and with all the momentum on their side, the Wolverines were fired up. But then came the play of the game as McCarty got loose for a 55-yard touchdown down the sidelines, putting Rapid back in command.

Lovell's extra point made it 33-14, then from there, the teams traded big plays. The Rockets blocked a Depuydt punt, then scored on an eight-yard TD run by Nolan Harris. Lovell's extra point made it 40-14.

Mid Pen responded with a 12-yard TD run by Verbrigghe and a two-point conversion pass to Keith Reynolds. That made it 40-22.

Mid Pen responded with a 12-yard TD run by Verbrigghe and a two-point conversion pass to Keith Reynolds. That made it 40-22.

Harris broke off a 57-yard run for the Rockets, setting the team up for a four-yard run by Forsyth. Mid Pen closed the scoring with a 53-yard touchdown run by Verbrigghe.

The teams combined for 774 yards of total offense (448 by Rapid River, 326 by Mid Pen).

McCarty led the Rockets with 222 yards on 22 carries and three scores. Harris had 103 yards on 10 carries and a TD, while Lindahl completed 4-of-7 passes for 59 yards with one touchdown and one pick. Lovell had three catches for 50 yards.

Verbrigghe led Mid Pen with 141 yards on 16 carries and two touchdowns. Chris Tritt had 62 yards on 11 carries and Wigand had 49 yards on eight carries, plus that 41-yard catch and run. Winkelbauer passed for 62 yards and rushed for 16 more yards.

Wolverines Lose to NCA Jets

The North Central Jets got four touchdown passes from quarterback Brian Veeser and beat the Mid Peninsula Woilverines, 28-16, Friday night in Rock.

Brad Verbrigghe scored on an 82-yard touchdown run on Mid Pen's first offensive play of the game, but the Wolverines did not score again until the final minute of the game when quarterback Todd Winkelbauer threw a 67-yard touchdown pass to Keith Reynolds.

In between, North Central scored 28 straight points to keep its playoff hopes alive. The Jets (5-3) must beat Pickford next week to make the Field of 256. The Wolverines (3-5) are eliminated from playoff contention.

Next week's game between the Mid Peninsula Wolverines and Rapid River Rockets has been moved from Friday to THURSDAY.

That's because many of the players on both teams also run cross country, and the Cross Country U.P. Finals are schedueld for Saturday morning in Sault Ste. Marie.

Playing the football game on Thursday will allow the players to go to the Soo on Friday and get some rest before the U.P. Finals.

Wolverines Win On Homecoming

Mid Peninsula Wolverines had a happy Homecoming Friday as three players rushed for more than 100 yards apiece and the team cruised to a 37-14 win over the Bark River-Harris Broncos.

The win kept Mid Pen's hopes for an 11th straight winning season alive, with games against North Central and Rapid River still to go.

"These last couple of games, we're playing old Wolverine (Conference) teams," Mid Pen Coach Jeremy Herman said. "I think for a while there, Bark River-Harris had like 20 wins to our four. There's still a lot riding on this season. There may not be playoffs for us, but there's a lot of pride to play for."

The tone for the game was set early when the Broncos went three-and-out, and a short punt set Mid Pen up at the BR-H 35. Four plays later, quarterback Todd Winkelbauer ran it in from six yards out to put the Wolverines ahead. The two-point conversion failed.

The next time the Wolverines had the ball, they fumbled on their own 21. But BR-H could not take advantage, and three incomplete passes from the 10 yard-line gave it back to Mid Pen.

The Wolverines drive 91 yards in seven plays, and Justin Wigand covered the last 53 yards for a touchdown to make it 12-0.

Things continued to go well for Mid Pen when Victor LaCosse blocked a Bronco punt, giving the Wolverines the ball in BR-H territory. Winkelbauer scored his second TD of the game from 14 yards out, and it was 18-0. But they missed ANOTHER two-point conversion.

The Broncos caught another break when they were forced to punt, but Chris Tritt fumbled it at the 24 yard-line. Quarterback Tyler Hanson found Eric White for a 14-yard pass, then Lucas Kleiman hurdled his way into the end zone to cut the deficit to 18-6.

The Wolverines responded with another long drive as the fog started to roll in. They drove 81 yards in 10 plays, including a 10-yard run on a fake punt by Winkelbauer. The next play after the fake, Brad Verbrigghe sprinted for a 33-yard score.

Herman, tired of missing two-point conversions, told lineman Earl Lancour to try an extra point. He made it, making it 25-6 at the half.

"He (Herman) said that in pre-game, we might have to try a couple of kicks because I was 4-for-4 in warmups," Lancour said. "We really haven't had to kick a lot this year."

"Our conversions have been just killing me," Herman said. "We drive all the way down there and score, then we can't get three yards. I don't know what it is. Earl can get the ball through the uprights once in a while, so I figured, one is better than none."

Mid Pen started the second half with another nice drive, but it ended on an interception by Brad Wagner at midfield. But BR-H could not move the football, and when the Wolverines got it back, Winkelbauer broke free for a 49-yard score to put the game away at 31-6.

The Broncos scored their final touchdown on a 54-yard drive that included a 15-yard pass from Hanson to John Heim, and a 10-yard touchdown run by Wagner. A two-point pass to Heim made it 31-14, but the Broncos could not get any closer.

Tritt scored the game's final touchdown in the fourth quarter to make it a 37-14 final.

(You can hear replays of touchdowns by Winkelbauer, Wigand, Kleiman and Tritt by clicking the LISTEN button on the left side of this page).

"It's nice to win on Homecoming," Verbrigghe said. "We lost the last couple, so it feels good. Now, we just need to win the next two."

Winkelbauer wound up with 115 yards rushing on 18 carries, and three touchdowns. Verbrigghe had 119 yards on 10 carries and one score, and Wigand had 110 yards on 11 carries and a touchdown.

"On my big runs, the linemen opened some big holes and I only had one man to beat," Verbrigghe said. "Every once in a while, I beat them, I guess. Coach said we needed to establish the 'middle game', with the grass being wet, and that would open up the outside. It was nice to spread the ball around and get everybody some touches. It keeps the defense on its feet."

"Our line has gone through some tough times this year," said Lancour, who is part of the offensive and defensive lines. "We're really starting to mesh here at the end of the season. This game, I think we did a good job in the second half."

Wagner led the Broncos with 52 yards on 16 carries and a touchdown, while Kleiman added 37 yards on 10 carries and a score. Hanson completed 8-of-19 passes for 98 yards and an interception.

Mid Pen outgained Bark River, 420-209, including 375-111 on the ground.

"Our down-field blocking was much better than in previous games," Herman said. "Our halfbacks and wideouts, when they weren't getting the ball, they were making some good blocks. That's what you need, because you never know when that guy (ball-carrier) is gonna cut back up field and need a block on the back side."

And, so it was a happy Homecoming for Mid Pen's players. Lancour was also happy for another reason, as his girlfriend, Heather Casey, was named Homecoming Queen. And Lancour's close friend, Wolverine center Josh Johnson, won Homecoming King.

So, does this mean that Lancour will let his buddy take his girlfriend to the Homecoming Dance?

"I don't think Josh is THAT good of a friend," Lancour laughed.

Meanwhile, Herman scowled nearby. He's not a fan of Homecoming dances. (How up-tight can you get, Coach?)

Undermanned Mid Pen Falls, 28-0

Mid Peninsula Wolverines Football Coach Jeremy Herman never uses injuries as an excuse for losing, but Friday night's game with North Dickinson showed just how big of a factor they can be.

Lineman Travis Depuydt and cornerback Brad Verbrigghe were both out with ankle injuries, and the Wolverines lost lineman Chris Micheau to a possible concussion in the second quarter.

The Wolverines had just 15 bodies to put onto the field, and most of them were little...only two 6-foot or taller, and several 160 pounds or lighter. North Dickinson, meanwhile, had a full complement of 23 players, including four at 225 pounds or more.

All of the above played a part in Friday's 28-0 Nordic victory, along with the fact that North Dickinson is the second-ranked team in the Upper Peninsua. The Nordics scored on four posessions in the first half, then the game was called at halftime after bad weather rolled in.

After waiting for about an hour, and after the two coaches and athletic directors huddled, the game was declared official rather than have the teams return on Saturday to play the second half.

Honestly, it would have been a waste of time and gas to come back Saturday. Despite a spirited (and hard-hitting) effort by the Wolverines, they were simply overmatched from the start.

The Nordics took the opening kickoff and drove 75 yards on six plays, with quarterback Paul Roell scoring from 14-yards out...using a sweet fake with the ball behind his back to do it.

Mid Pen appeared to tie the game up when quarterback Todd Winkelbauer got free for a 47-yard touchdown run, but a holding penalty brought it back. Mid Pen didn't threaten again.

The Nordics drove 53 yards in 10 plays on their second posession, with Garth Budek scoring from five yards out. John Nurmi scored the two-point conversion to make it 14-0.

The Wolverines were handcuffed by poor field position and went three-and-out. The Nordics took over at the 46 and five plays later, Mike Miller scored on a five-yard TD run to make it 20-0. Budek's two-point conversion run made it 22-0

The Wolverines put together a couple of first downs on their next posession, and drove to the Nordic 46 after Adam Soyring found Chris Tritt for a 25-yard strike.

(You can hear replays of two of North Dickinson's touchdowns, plus a pass from Soyring to Tritt, by clicking the LISTEN button on the left side of this page).

But Mid Pen ended up punting, and Winkelbauer buried the Nordics at their own one yard line. Sure enough, North Dickinson drove 99 yards and Budek scored a three-yard TD with 43 seconds left in the half to make it 28-0.

When the Wolverines got the ball back. Winkelbauer was stopped for a one-yard gain and Micheau took a knee to the helmet. He was down for a long while before being carted off on a stretcher. The officials sent both teams to the locker room for an early halftime, and while both teams were indoors, weather rolled in.

Officials waited for about an hour before calling the game official. About an hour after everybody went home, another batch of heavy thunderstorms rolled through the area, showing that the decision to end the game at 8:45 ET was a good one.

North Dickinson had 252 yards rushing (Peter Leeman had 82, Budek 62, Damien Smith 58, Roell 42). Mid Pen had just 56 yards of total offense and ran a total of 16 plays from scrimmage.

Mid Pen Routed By L'Anse, 46-8

It was an old-fashioned butt-kicking Friday night as the L'Anse Purple Hornets used their size and skill advantage to top the Mid Peninsula Wolverines, 46-8.

L'Anse rolled to a 38-0 lead in the second quarter and sat their starters for the entire second half, which was played with a running clock under the mercy rule.

"They definately out-hustled and out-hit us," Mid Pen Head Coach Jeremy Herman said. "When you get guys that size, hitting that hard...we took the brunt of it. We were out-hustled and they were pushing us around out there."

The Hornets featured a line-up with six lineman over 200 pounds, including two who are pushing 300. And their backs ran hard behind the holes opened up by the line.

The tone for the game was set on the first play of the game when Cameron Aten rumbled for 43 yards. Five plays later, Dan Perrault was in teh end zone, completing a 77-yard drive.

The Wolverines went three-and-out, with all three plays resulting in negative yards. After a punt, L'Anse took over at mid-field and Perrault and Jaron McIntyre broke off back-to-back 25 yard runs. Then Aten scored from one yard out to make it 14-0.

"That's a tough way to start a game," Herman said. "I think after that first drive, maybe we got a little apprehensive. They were firing off the ball, they were lower, they were driving off their feet. Fundamentally, they just basically took it to us."

The Wolverine offense continued to sputter, and early in the second quarter, the Hornets completed another nine-play drive, with Aten scoring from two yards out. When Perrault ran in the two-pointer, it was 22-0 and the Wolverines still didn't have a first down.

A three-yard run by Todd Winkelbauer with 7:45 left in the half delivered that first first down, but moments later, Mid Pen had to punt again. The Hornets drove 67 yards in seven plays for another touchdown, with the big play being a 32-yard pass from David Pynnonen to Matt Salli. McIntyre scored from six yards out.

Things got even worse for Mid Pen in the closing seconds of the half when Travis Depuydt's punt got blocked. McIntyre picked up the loose ball and ran 42 yards for a score. A pass to Salli for two points made it 38-0, and the sceond half was played by the mercy rule.

L'Anse second-stringers put together a 55-yard drive in the fourth quarter, with Gary Gagnier scoring a touchdown. At that point, the Hornets were over 300 yards in offense and Mid Pen had negative two yards.

But in the closing minutes, the Wolverines put together a 62-yard drive which ended on a nine-yard touchdown run by Justin Wigand. Winkelbauer ran in the two-pointer with 1:52 to go, but all it did was break the shutout for the Wolverines.

"They didn't give up and I'm proud of them for that," Herman said. "I wish we had hustled a little better in the first half. But these guys have a lot of heart."

L'Anse (2-0) ended up with 386 yards in total offense, with Perrault getting 119 and Aten 113. Mid Pen finished with 50 yards in total offense, with Wigand getting 40 of them.

"They're not happy about the butt-kicking they just got," Herman said. "I told the guys, 'you should feel bad. Feel bad until maybe Sunday afternoon, then we have to regroup for Cedarville."

Then, he added:
"Maybe it's good that these guys got a butt-whipping this week because maybe they'll come out a little harder next week."
