Eskymos Top Braves To Stay Undefeated
The Escanaba High School tennis team improved to 10-0 on the season Tuesday by beating the Gladstone Braves, 6-2, at Gladstone's Pfotenhauer Park.
The Eskymos won all four singles flights, while Gladstone posted wins at #1 and #2 doubles.
"It was a nice win for us, but it is only one match," Escanaba Coach Dennis Lueneberg said. "Rich (Trombley, Gladstone's coach) had a few changes in his lineup. Our singles went well, and our #3 and #4 doubles played decent."
And what about the prospects of an undefeated season, with two matches left to play?
"To be honest, I'm keeping it low-key," Lueneberg said. "They know that they're undefeated. But there's not a lot of talk in practice that 'oh, we've got to go undefeated'." Escanaba hosts Gwinn Monday. Gladstone hosts Munising Thursday. Pictured above: Escanaba's Codi Jenshak serves. |
Escanaba Tennis Team Stays Unbeaten

Escanaba's Codi Jenshak gets ready to make a return in her tough match with Kingsford's Sam Fleming Thursday. Fleming won, 6-2, 6-7, 6-4. Pictured below: Escanaba's Erin Gregoire swats the ball toward Kingsford's Hannah Tresedder in a #2 singles match. Gregoire won her match, 6-3, 4-6, 6-2.
The Escanaba High School girls tennis team beat Kingsford, 7-1, in Great Northern Conference action Thursday in Escanaba.
The Eskymos won all four doubles matches. "We had some nice performances today," Escanaba Coach Dennis Lueneberg said. "We won 7-1, but it could have easily been 4-4. The girls showed me something today. They were focused."
Lueneberg says Jenshak played well against a veteran player in Fleming.
"Codi played a nice tiebreaker and then Sam tightened up. Codi's still learning while Sam's been in this game a long time. But Codi has also made a lot of progress."
Lueneberg was also happy with Gregoire's match. "She won a close one. She's got the confidence now to win in three sets. Last year, if she would have won the first set and lost the second set, she would've packed it in and lost the third set."

Escanaba, Westwood Girls Keep Rolling
The Escanaba Eskymos and Westwood Patriots both stayed unbeaten Wednesday in girls tennis. Escanaba topped West Iron County, 6-2, in Iron River..winning all four doubles flights in the process.
Meanwhile, Westwood won in Marquette, 7-1, taking all but the No. 3 singles flight. Neither the Eskymos nor the Patriots have lost more than two flights in a match this season. The bad news for U.P. tennis fans is that these two teams are not scheduled to face each other this season. That will have to wait until the U.P. Finals. |
Esky Tennis Tops Marquette, Menominee
The Escanaba High School girls tennis tem won a pair of Great Northern Conference matches on Monday, beating Marquette, 6-2, and then shutting out Menominee, 8-0. Marquette beat Menominee, 8-0, in the other leg of Monday's triangular in Ludington Park.
Escanaba now has a 3-0 record in meets during the first days of this season.
"We're off to a good start, but it's early in the season," Escanaba Coach Dennis Lueneberg said. "Marquette is good, but we're just deeper. They'll still give us some trouble in some flights this season. I thought our #4 doubles team (Lauren Pelligrini and Josie Goddard) had a real nice day. They played well for being in a #4 position." |
