High School Hoops All-Star Games In Norway The high school boys and girls basketball All-Star games, featuring the best graduating seniors in the Upper Peninsula, were held in Norway Saturday. In the boys game, the South beat the North, 94-87, as Gwinn's Matt Sinnaevae scored 18 points and Superior Central's Dylan Johnson added 14. Sinnavae was chosen as the game MVP. Sinnavae (23) is pictured at left making a tough shot during a game last season in Gladstone. North Central's Tyler Mercier had ten points, and Rapid River's Derek Pistulka and Christian Harris both scored nine points. Cedarville's Connor McLeod led all scorers with 25 points for the North team. In the girls game, the North easily beat the South, 88-58. Pickford's Justine Hatfield scored 19 points and was chosen as the game's MVP.

Superior Central Season Ends In Final 4 Again                      The boys basketball season came to an end for the Superior Central Cougars Thursday in much the same way as it ended last year: with a loss to a private school in the Class D state semifinals. This time, the Cougars got off to a great start but lost to Wyoming Tri-Unity Christian, 62-49, at Michigan State University's Breslin Center. The Cougars led, 15-10, at the end of the first quarter, but the Defenders led, 25-24, at halftime. Tri-Unity went on a 9-0 run to start the second half to build a 34-24 lead. The Cougars rallied to within four points, but their star big man, Dylan Johnson, was injured and finished the game on the bench. Jordan Chartier had 15 points and Lukas Maki added 13 for the Cougars, who finish the season at 23-2. Class C, D Basketball All-State Teams Picked  The Upper Peninsula was well-represented on the Class C and Class D All-State basketball teams, announced this week by the Associated Press. In Class C, Ishpeming's Gabe Eppert was named to the First Team, and L'Anse's Alex Beeler was an honorable mention Selection. Wes Leonard of Fennville High School, who passed away tragically after making a winning shot during a basketball game two weeks ago, also made the All-State team. In Class D, Superior Central's Jordan Chartier (#23 pictured at left) was named the state's co-player of the year. Joe Larson of Chassell also made the first team, and Superior Central Coach Cary Chartier was the Class D Coach of the Year. Cedarville's Connor McLeod got "special mention", and Rapid River's Derek Pistulka and Dollar Bay's Tim Dunstan each got honorable mention.

Johnson Dominates; Cougars In Final 4 Again!                         The Superior Central Cougars topped the Cedarville Trojans in a well-played game Tuesday night, 82-71. ESCANABA---In the end, one man made all the difference as the Superior Central Cougars and Cedarville Trojans battled in the Class D state basketball quarterfinals Tuesday night in Escanaba. Cougar senior Dylan Johnson was on fire from both inside the lane and out, scoring 34 points to lead the Cougars to an 82-71 win over the Trojans. The result sends Superior Central to the state semifinals at Michigan State University for the second straight year, but it sure wasn't easy. The game was played at a break-neck pace, with the teams running up and down the court fast and furious. There were 46 points on the board after the first quarter, with each team getting 23 of them. There were few stoppages of play, not many fouls, and an up-and-down offensive flow that was pleasing to the 2,150 fans who jammed into this gymnasium. The Cougars (24-1, ranked #1 in Class D) made a run in the second quarter as Cedarville had trouble at the foul line, and made several turnovers. Superior Central led, 50-39, at halftime after scoring 27 points in second quarter. Cougar Branson Richard (22) on the baseline.>>> The Trojans (22-3, ranked #4 in Class D) never gave up, however, and made a game of it in the second half, closing to within five points on a couple of occassions in the fourth. But Johnson met every challenge. Johnson is 6-foot-5, but he can also shoot the three. And on two occassions, he was fouled by Cedarville's 6-8 big man Connor McLeod. Each of those fouls gave Johnson a chance to go to the line, and more importantly, halting the momentum that the Trojans were building. One turning point came with five minutes left in the game, and the Cougars nursing a 66-61 lead. Jordan Chartier got loose inside, took a bounce pass, and scored a basket and got fouled. Then, the second turning point came a minute later, with Superior Central leading, 71-64. McLeod, playing with four fouls, was called for a smack on Johnson. McLeod fouled out on that play. From there, Superior Central played smart with the ball, made its free throws, and started to dance toward the Breslin Center. The boys will play Wyoming Tri-Unity Christian Thursday night. The game will be broadcast live on WCHT-AM (600) and rrnsports.com. Besides Johnson's 34 points, Chartier was good in all aspects of the game, pouring in 18 points. Bronson Richard was also good for the Cougars, adding ten points. For the Trojans, McLeod led the way with 18 points. Jordan Baker added 17 points and Martin Payment chipped in with ten. Below, the Cedarville fans were just as loud.                        CLASS C QUARTER: MC BAIN 57, NEGAUNEE 51 (OT)---The Negaunee Miners had the lead for almost the entire game Tuesday night, but the boys ended up losing to the McBain Ramblers, 57-51, in the Class C state quarterfinals in Petoskey. Negaunee led, 13-5, after the first quarter, and the Miners led, 28-18, at halftime. Negaunee led, 33-22, in the third quarter, before the Ramblers battled back. McBain ended up tying the game at 41-41 in the final seconds, and then the Ramblers (24-2) put up 16 points in the four-minute overtime period. Negaunee finished its season with a 20-6 record.

Negaunee Outlasts Norway To Win 'C' Regional                         The Negaunee Miners won a Class C Regional Championship Wednesday night in Escanaba. The boys topped the Norway Knights, 40-29, in a defensive battle that sends the Miners into next week's quarterfinal round. The result also ends the Cinderella playoff run of the Knights, who were 6-14 in the regular season but won their district championship and advanced to the regional final. Norway Grinds Past Ironwood In 'C' Regional  The Norway Knights played strong defense and made numerous free throws to get past the Ironwood Red Devils, 59-47, in the Class C regional semifinal Monday night in Escanaba. Jalen Bal scored 20 points to lead the Knights (12-11), while Tyler Gottschalk had 21 points for the Red Devils (18-6).
