Flivvers, Miners Tie For D-1 U.P. Tennis Title
The Negaunee Miners and Kingsford Flivvers will share the MHSAA Upper Division One Upper Peninsula boys tennis championship. Both teams ended up with 16 points, while Marquette was third with 11. Escanaba finished fourth, Gladstone fifth, and Menominee sixth.
Kingsford's Tyler Szabo won at #1 singles, and Flivver Stefan Sirakov (pictured at left) won at #2 singles. Kingsford completed the singles sweep with Caleb Harrington winning at #3 and Andy Ross at #4.
Negaunee's Nathan Alexander and Preston Paulson won at #1 doubles, and Miners Joe Kari and Nathan Waters won at #2. Kingsford's Jake Gaudette and Brock Francis won at #3 doubles, and Marquette's Easton Viitala and Mike McAuliffe won #4.

West Iron Tops Westwood For D-2 Tennis Title
The West Iron Clounty Wykons won the Division Two Upper Peninsula boys tennis championship on Wednesday. The Wykons had 20 points, while Westwood was second with 18 points. Iron Mountain and Ishpeming finished way behind in third and fourth, respectively.
The Wykons won three of the four flights in singles (Davin Lindwahl #1, Greg Ahlberg #2, Austin Warra #3) and they won two of the doubles flights (Nick Rosseau/Paul Angeli at #1, Tanner Mayo/Chris Paul at #2).
Westwood's Juan Fernandez won at #4 singles, and the Patriots won at #3 doubles (Nando Raupp/Jared Axford) and at #4 doubles (Julian Esefeld/Jarrett Davidson). |
Eskymo Tennis Team Fights Hard vs Marquette
The Escanaba High School Tennis Team played the powerhouse Marquette Redmen on Tuesday, and lost, 6-2. But Eskymo Coach Jim Hansen was happy.
His team played much better against the Redmen than in their previous meeting.
This time, the doubles team of Seth Cassell and Tyler Englund won a match, and Jack Klim won at singles.
Hansen said: "Marquette is undefeated and has been the best team in the U.P. all year. We won more games and won a couple of matches this time around. I'm proud of the guys for continually improving throughout the year and making strides against a premier team."

In other action Tuesday, Gladstone lost to Negaunee, 7-1. Braves Freshman Aaron Parmet was the only Gladstone winner.

Eskymos, Flivvers Play Tennis In The Rain
The Escanaba Eskymos and Kingsford Flivvers were rained out of a tennis match earlier this month. Then on Friday, as the teams made up the match, sure enough, it started to rain again.

The Escanaba Eskymos won all four doubles matches Thursday, good enough to post a 5-3 win over the Menominee Maroons.
