Young Eskymos Kick Off 2012 Baseball Season

The Escanaba Eskymos have just three seniors on their roster, but heavy plenty of young talent as the 2012 high school baseball season begins Tuesday evening. Escanaba will host the Marquette Redmen in the first game under new head coach Kirk Schwalbach.

"Senior Night" ceremonies won't take long, with only Alex DeHaan, Austin Young, and Ian DeMarse making up the Class of 2012. But the Eskymos do have talent in returning junior starters Nick Vandermissen and Dave Falish. The addition of sophomore Ben Kleiman to the pitching rotation will help, and sophomore Travis Heller's bat will be a welcome addition to the line-up. The Eskymos have a busy week this week, with single games both Tuesday and Wednesday, and doubleheaders on Friday and Saturday. You can hear all of the Eskymo games live on WCHT-AM (600), and on-line at www.rrnsports.com.

Delta County Softball Teams Succeed In Dome

Delta County's three high school softball teams had a successful weekend at the ninth annual Northern Michigan University "Spring Swing" softball tournament.

The Rapid River Rockets won all three of their games, the Escanaba Eskymos went 2-1, and the Gladstone Braves went 1-1-1, with their only loss coming to the Rockets. And the Escanaba junior varsity team won all three of its games in the two-day event.

On Saturday, the Escanaba Eskymos topped the Negaunee Miners, 3-2, as Codi Jenshak's infield hit with the bases loaded won it. The Eskymos later lost to the Gladstone Braves, 5-1. The Braves, in turn, tied Sault Ste. Marie, 8-8, then later fell to Rapid River, 2-1. For the Rockets, their first Saturday game was an 8-2 win over Marquette as Averi Kanyuh homered and Neena Brockway won in the circle.

MANISTIQUE 5, HOUGHTON 4---The Manistique Emeralds beat the Houghton Gremlins, 5-4, Saturday at the Dome. The Emeralds came from a 4-1 deficit, scoring three of their runs on suicide squeezes. "Yeah, we played a little small ball," Emeralds Coach Dave McNeil said. "It was fun. We went 2-1 this weekend. Good start." Earlier in the day, Manistique lost to Rudyard, 16-2, after beating Newberry Friday.

Rockets Open Softball Season With 10-1 Win

The 2012 high school softball season got under way Friday with the ninth-annual Northern Michigan University Spring Swing Softball tournament at the Superior Dome.

The Rapid River Rockets beat the Superior Central Cougars, 10-1, as Shannon Wolf hit two home runs and Heather Sanderson added an inside-the-park homer. Savannah Stenlund, Neena Brockway, and Averyi Kanyuh combined to throw a four-hitter on the mound. The Rockets had 16 hits in the game.

ESCANABA 6, MARQUETTE 1---The Escanaba Eskymos opened the season on a positive note Friday, beating the Marquette Redettes, 6-1, at the Dome. Codi Jenshak picked up the win on the mound. The Eskymos will play two more games on Saturday.

ESCANABA JV 16, STEPHENSON 2---The Escanaba Junior Varsity team topped the Stephenson Eagles varsity team, 16-2, Friday night. Brittany Bruce and Jessica Gill both hit home runs for Escanaba. Sam Connor and Jaymie Frappier each pitched two innings in the mercy-shortened game.

MANISTIQUE 8, NEWBERRY 5---The Emeralds won their season-opener, but suffered a huge blow in pre-game warm-ups when sophomore Vanessa McNamara jumped up to catch a fly ball. McNamara caught the ball, and flipped over the outfield fence. When she landed, she broke her arm. "She is our most passionate player out there," Emeralds Coach Dave McNeil said. "Even in practice, she never gives up on any play. That was a fluke accident. We'll have to wait and see how bad it is."

Kallio Leads Atlanta To National Championship

The Atlanta Knights won the USA Hockey Junior A Tier III National Championship on Tuesday afternoon, beating the Long Island (NY) Royals, 4-3, in Rochester, Minn.

Escanaba High School graduate Brent Kallio scored the first two goals of the game and then the Knights held on from there. Kallio finished the tournament with seven points (3G, 4A) in five games. He had a goal and two assists in the Knights' 6-1 win over the Chicago Bulldogs in last Thursday's opener. And he had two assists in the national semifinal win over Billings (Mont.) Monday.

"It's pretty hard to put my exact emotions into one word," Kallio said after the title game. "It is the craziest feeling of happiness that I've ever had in my life."

Atlanta won all five of its games in the national tournament, beating Chicago, Helena (Mont.), Billings (Mont.), and Long Island twice.

Kallio is a 2010 Escanaba High School graduate. In two seasons with the Eskymos between 2008 and 2010, Kallio had 18 goals and 24 assists for 42 points. He then played with the Alpena (Jr. A) Thunder before moving to Atlanta the following year.

"I didn't think I was going to play hockey after high school," Kallio said. "Then I got a call and they said I should try out. I was skeptical at first, but I had to give it a shot. And look at me now!"

Kallio still has one more year of junior eligibility remaining, and he says he may return to Atlanta next year. Or college? "I'm keeping my options open," he said.
